Bibliophilic Monologues

Fat Cat

Fat Cat - Robin Brande I was looking forward to this book as it seemed to be a nice step away from the YA fantasy I practically inhale these days. And I wasn't disappointed much. The pace is fast, the writing wonderful, the characters well created. I was a bit taken back by the sheer amount of junk food the main character eats in the first few chapters - it seemed incredible but that's just because... anyway. I had a few problems with the romance angle. The first guy I could understand - jerk, didn't work out, yaddi yadda. The second guy with whom she falls in lust? What was his purpose? To show that she was desirable? Um yeah, we got that already. His presence seemed entirely superfluous to the story especially since the author does not resolve the fact that the jerky guy (guy she ends up with) dissed the protagonist to the Lust-Guy. Hah, I can't remember the names of any of the characters, sorry. But my point it, I understand it was to showcase his jealousy but come on now, since when is "she's slutty" a way to confess love? Or to illustrate your love? "Stay away or I'll break all your bones" works muuuuch better. I would give it a 3.5 but it gets a four for the fact that the writing isn't horrible and the foodie in my appreciates the (fairly obvious) love for it in the book.
