This was a book intended for MG kids and the protagonists were younger than the ones I usually read. However, this did not detract from my overall enjoyment of the book though I did need a moment to re-situate myself. Fern is weird. At least in comparison to the other students of her grade. She wears sunglasses at breakfast and prefers spending time in trees to hanging out with kids who don't attempt to understand her. She has skin that is very sensitive to the sun and she grew fangs before she grew any other teeth. If your spider senses aren't tingling by now, you might need new ones. Ms. Kogler skillfully weaves a story about discovery and coming into your own and inserts into this story an honest look about the cruelties children inflict on others they don't or can't accept. The fantastic portion aside, this book deals more with belonging even where you shouldn't and accepting those you shouldn't be able to. The writing is crisp and the characters likable. The plot is well paced and keeps the reader entertained until the last page has been read.
